2023 Midlands4Cities Summer School

Telling a Story: An introduction to Research in Arts & Humanities.

Midlands4Cities Summer School

Telling a Story: An introduction to Research in Arts & Humanities.

What is Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP)?

Midlands4Cities is a partnership of eight universities in the Midlands funded by the Arts and Humanities Research council to offer funding and support PhD research:  https://www.midlands4cities.ac.uk/

What is the Midlands4Cities Summer School?

  • The 2023 Midlands4Cities Summer School is able to offer 16 undergraduates from underrepresented ethnic minority groups the opportunity to join a small cohort for two weeks with the aim of exploring what arts and humanities research is and how research findings can be applied and communicated.
  • Successful applicants will be paid the Living Wage for 35 hours per week for two weeks via Unitemps. They will be partnered with a mentor from the current M4C PhD community and have the opportunity to learn a range of research skills and present their findings from the two weeks at a final session.
  • The Summer School will run from Monday 4 September until Friday 15th September.  Over the course of the two weeks there will be an induction in Birmingham, visits to Stratford to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and an opportunity to attend a matinee performance of Macbeth at the RSC.  Attendees will participate in online and in person training and mentoring to enable them to design and develop a short piece of research which they can share via a poster.
  • Over the course of the summer school, we want to provide the information, tools and space to think about what research is, what skills are needed to carry out successful research and information to think about career opportunities research can offer.
