Broadway is an independent cinema in Nottingham city centre. A part of the city’s cultural life since the 1960s, when it began as the Nottingham Film Theatre, it has a long history that intersects with changes in both cinema-going and the city itself. However, this history has not yet been made public or shared with the wider Nottingham community. To address this gap, Broadway are developing a National Lottery Heritage Fund application for the creation of an on-site museum space exploring the history of the venue and cinemagoing. They hold a significant amount of material including cinema technologies, marketing/publicity and papers relating to the venue’s history.
This placement will help Broadway catalogue their material and paper holdings and compile potential narratives for their museum design. The successful candidate should have a background in curatorial or heritage studies. Knowledge of film/cinema history is desired but not essential. They will work with Broadway staff and Professor Liz Evans (Department of Culture, Media and Visual Studies, University of Nottingham) over a period of 3 months to produce a catalogue of materials and contribute to writing the Heritage Fund bid.
