Thesis title:

The Eastern Provincial Coinage of the Flavian Imperial Women

Classical scholarship has studied the Flavian imperial women (69-96 AD) through an imperial lens thus neclecting valuable provincial evidence which has the capacity to inform our understanding of the Flavian empresses as well as advance our knowldege of the provincial-imperial socio-political relationship of the 1st Century AD.  This PhD will investigate the numismatic representation of the Flavian imperial women on coinage of the eastern provinces within a wider representational context of sculpture and epigraphy.

Research areas of interest include:

  • Adminstration of eastern provinces in 1st century AD.
  • Impact of the imperial cult on iconographic choice.
  • Emperor vs. Empress coin imagery.
  • The socio-political power of numismatic iconography.
