The MHR is looking for new editors and new content!

The MHR (previously Midlands Historical Review) publishes broadly on any topic within the Arts and Humanities and is a valuable platform for postgraduate students looking to publish their research. According to a recent Google Analytics survey, the website attracts 19,000 views a year from across 44 countries over 6 continents!

Call for papers

We have a constant open call for papers and reviews. We consider research articles (around 7,000 words), shorter current affairs pieces (around 2,000 words), and book reviews (around 1,500 words).

Assistant Editors

The journal is also a place for people looking to hone their editorial skills. We are looking for postgraduate or postdoctoral students who would be interested in signing up as assistant editors to edit submissions relating to their research areas. This is a fantastic opportunity for any student interested in academic editing who would like to gain experience in a supportive, student-led environment.

Lead Editor (Book Reviews)

We also have some openings on our central management team. We are looking for a Lead Editor to manage the book reviews section of the journal.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working with those who express an interest in writing for MHR in identifying suitable books for review
  • Peer reviewing all book reviews and conference proceedings to determine whether they are at an acceptable standard for further review or require changes
  • Liaising with authors throughout the editing process
  • Assigning peer review submissions to assistant editors and managing their process
  • Working with the Editor-in-Chief to ensure work is of a publishable quality
  • Attending and contributing to MHR editorial team meetings
  • Helping to promote and expand MHR

The post is suitable for a postgraduate student from any Arts and Humanities discipline. Previous editorial experience is welcome but not essential.

Social Media Editor

The MHR is also looking for a Social Media Editor who would be responsible for maintaining the journal’s online presence and extending the journal’s outreach through social media posts.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building the journal’s online profile
  • Expanding the journal’s outreach to new, upcoming social media platforms
  • Designing and producing social media posts
  • Responding to interactions through the social media platforms
  • Advertising all new articles and editing opportunities on social media platforms
  • Checking Google Analytics for website and providing the relevant information for advertising/the editorial team as is necessary.

The post is suitable for a postgraduate student from any discipline. Previous experience with social media management is desirable but not essential.
