Your archives and heritage sector needs you!

Are you aged 18-30 and have an interest in archives and heritage?Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage is delivering a course over five days that provides an opportunity to learn from archives and heritage industry specialists, as a part of the National Lottery Heritage Fund project, Unearthed: Forgotten Histories. The course is aimed at young people with African and African Caribbean, Asian and Latinx heritage based in the UK, who are currently under-represented in the heritage sector.The course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of working with archives, which enhances opportunities for future careers and qualifications. focuses on the development of key skills associated with archives and the future of the sector. After the success of the Young Archivists programme in 2022 and 2023, participants pursued careers in libraries, began further education qualifications and obtained employment as a result of the course.
 
 
What the course includes:
  • The course is free to attend.

  • Training sessions will be hosted at Serendipity in Leicester.

  • There will also be an overnight stay in London with the opportunity to visit and hear from speakers at the Stuart Hall Library, Tate Britain and the Museum of London Docklands.

  • Sessions cover topics on digital archives, oral history, copyright essentials, leadership, marketing, technology and audiences.

  • There will be an opportunity to explore how heritage organisations are representing African and African Caribbean cultures and how these cultures shape British identities.

 

Criteria
  • Applicants must be available for the duration of the course, Monday 14 October – Friday 18 October 2024.

  • Applicants must have an enthusiasm and interest in archives and the heritage sector.

  • Applicants must be between 18-30 years old at the point of applying.

  • Applicants are actively welcomed to apply who have a disability, and are from under-represented groups in the heritage sector, including applicants w African and African Caribbean, Asian or Latinx heritage.
