Thesis title:

Revolution Forestalled: Writing Nottingham, 1975-1985.

The goal of this thesis is to explore the ways in which close reading literary texts within their historical context can produce readings alive to the affective realities of the communities represented, and consequently new understandings of socio-cultural realities of the time. This is an evolution of what the American critic Fredric Jameson referred to as “historical formalism”, a relatively untested methodology in the study of post-war working class British writing.
