Thesis title:
My project analyses the representation of female nudity in Late Antique and Early Byzantine secular art (4th-8th century CE). By looking at the modes of reception of the Classical nude in Early Byzantine art, I aim to complicate the traditional historiographical discourse on socio-cultural attitudes towards the female body, Christian morality, and gender identities in Late Antiquity.
I am particularly interested in the relationship between art and viewers, Byzantine theories of vision, perceptions of the body in Byzantium, and the transcultural movements of images during Late Antiquity in the Mediterranean and beyond.
Other research interests include Islamic art, collecting practices of African art, and the display of African objects in European museums, an interest I pursued with a MA in Museums and Collections at Leiden University.
