Thesis title:

Corporeal Soundings in 20th Century Art and Protest

My research explores the politics of vocal sounds and noises in 20th century art and protest, with a focus on cultural expressions concerned with the trauma of war. The project asks whether these sounds, particularly in the service of an antimilitaristic agenda, can be read as noisy disobedience against silence’s obedience. I consider whether non-linguistic vocal sounds are interpretable not as a substitute for traditional forms of language, but rather a vital expansion of it in the context of antimilitaristic art and protest.
