Thesis title:

The Episcopal Economy of Anglo-Saxon England c. 640-1016CE.

This project will re-evaluate the role of bishops in the economic development of England c.640 to 1016CE. It will determine how bishops became a major catalyst in the promotion of trade and urbanism both within and beyond their dioceses. By examining the geographical distribution of episcopal coins, their economic interests recorded in charters and their presence in charter witness lists, my project will arrive at a new appreciation of the bishops’ contributions to the economies of the English kingdoms.
