We offer two routes for PhD study

Open Doctoral Award

Our Open Doctoral Awards are student-led, and we invite high-quality applications within any disciplinary and interdisciplinary area of the arts and humanities. You will:  

  • agree a research proposal with academic supervisors within the M4C partnership, with the potential to build cross-institutional supervisory teams to maximize fit and expertise 
  • be accepted for study at a particular institution (your ‘home’ university) 
  • produce a quality thesis, and take advantage of personal, professional and career development opportunities through M4C’s commitment to ‘quality thesis plus’.

Collaborative Doctoral Award

Our Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs) are co-designed between an M4C university and an external partner organisation. CDAs offer a project with established research aims, responding to particular needs in the cultural, creative and heritage sectors.

Supervisory teams are pre-established and are made up of academics from the M4C partnership and a member of the external partner organisation.

A Collaborative Doctoral Award allows you to:

  • produce a quality thesis under expert academic and partner supervision
  • gain first-hand experience of partner organisations outside the university environment
  • enhance employability and skills through development opportunities in line with M4C’s commitment to ‘quality thesis plus’.
